Pro-union TV ad campaign begins

Starting Jan. 13, you may see TV commercials urging passage of the Employee Free Choice Act.

The $3 million labor-backed ad campaign features workers and scripts like this:

Worker #1: I hope to have some health care...for a change.

Worker #2: I hope to work just one job...for a change.

Worker #3: I hope to be able to save a little...for a change.

Voice over: We voted on Election Day for hope and change. Now it’s time for action. The Employee Free Choice Act lets workers choose to join a union to earn better pay, health benefits and job security.

You can view the ads online.

With the economic stimulus package, Cabinet confirmations and other business on its plate, Congress may not tackle the explosive Free Choice bills quickly. But don't expect the issue to go away.

The entire reason that congress has drafted this bill is due to the 1.8 Billion dollars that has been granted to their election campaigns from the unions in the 2006 and 2008 campaigns. Obama himself received hundreds of millions from the union in 2008.This isn't change, this is the type of politics that has led to the broken government that has put this country into unbelievable amount of debt, the only difference is the party, this time it's the democrats. If you want to see the effects of heavy unionization look at Canada, the majority there is union, and the cost of living is out of control. Canadian companies are closing shop and moving to the U.S. now because they can’t afford to operate there. The entire Durham region has been devastated a result of this. If you give everyone what they want then you increase the cost of goods, which then leads to inflation. You know the old analogy “robbing Peter to pay Paul”. Just look at the U.S. automakers, do we really want to empower the very organizations that have crippled these companies and made them uncompetitive, forcing us as tax payers to bail them out. The billions of dollars spent by the unions in donations to election campaigns is money that they could be used to help their employees with while they are being laid off because they have driven the cost of service too high. The math doesn’t add up unless you take a close look at those in favor of this bill and where they received there election funding from. It is time for us as a country to stop giving our money to the unions, who in turn give the money to the politicians, and start giving it those who are responsible contributors of society.

I am not really for or against unions, but this act violates everything that the US believes in.

Anybody at anytime can try to start a union at their place of work. All it takes is some signatures on some cards. Unions have been very successful at getting to this phase. Where unions lose out is during the secret vote. Workers cannot be intimidated during a secret vote. Under the "Employee Free Choice Act" the secret ballot is taken away. If you believe this is for the worker, you don't know the facts. Unions have been losing membership in rapid numbers. The folks running the union have less money to run the union. They need fresh blood to fund the union and the only way to get is is through intimidation.

You brainwashed sheep who hate unions are so stupid, you morons think that companies will pay decent workers decent wages, i guess you believe in santa clause and the tooth fairy too. Companies only pay workers with what they can get away with plain and simple. The reason why some non union workers make decent wages is cause of the threat of unionization. Unions are why everyone in this country gets some sort of benefits with their jobs, and unions are the reason why higher than poverty wages are paid out to employees. If unions were not around, this country would be like a 3rd world country, with rich and poor only, and if you think otherwise your very stupid. By the way its been proven that union workers are more productive, cause union workers receive more and better training, and union workers stay at their jobs longer because of the pay and benefits, and the longer you stay at a job, the better you are at it. So to all you hicks who dont like unions, open your eyes and quit being so brainwashed and get out from under your boss' desks and stand up for yourselves for once in your lives you cowards. Unless your management, or rich, there is no reason to hate unions, unless of course you dont care about your familys financial well being, you anti union deadbeat trash can go you know where....

It is all BS. Voting for a union will have none of this. I have worked in companies with and without unions from the management side.
Seemed to be a lazier, dumber workforce where the unions were and they were fiercely protected. All workers were treated the same, so a bad employee and a great employee were given the same raise.

Without a union you can reward those that earn it through hard work. Sorry union supporters to say such blasphemy.

Are you really quoting a "Union Advantage" poll from the AFL-CIO? Talk about conflict of interest. I wonder what the AFL-CIO did to the people who said no? Think the poll takers were overpaid union workers too?

if you are dumb enough to believe the propaganda from the unions and their members, then by all means join. Be secure in the knowledge that unions have worked wonders for Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit, the steel industry, the car industry, the airlines, the textile workers, air traffic controllers, MLB umpires, etc, etc...

Myth vs. Reality: The REALITY is the Employee Free Choice Act Helps American Workers and their Families

As more and more working Americans struggle to make ends meet, the ability to form a union is key to the economic stability, health, and well-being of American families. Union workers’ median weekly earnings are 30 percent higher than those of non-union workers, union workers are 63 percent more likely to have employer-sponsored health insurance, and union workers are 77 percent more likely to have short-term disability benefits. According to a recent poll, nearly 60 percent of Americans would join a union if they could. (AFL-CIO, “The Union Difference: Union Advantage by the Numbers.”)

Free Financial Advice

4/9/09

Question:

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.
