More Great Mall closings

x

The Great Mall of the Great Plains has new local owners who hope to fill it with local and regional tenants in the short term, and add more national tenants later.

But some current tenants aren't sticking around that long.

Noah's Ark Gift Shoppe is relocating. The inspirational Christian book, cards, music and gift store has opened a new store in Town Square, 108 N. Clairborne Road, Olathe.

It will close in the Great Mall on Jan. 31 when its lease expires and is now having a clearance sale with items between 50-and-75 percent off.

The local owners said they wanted to work less hours and in the new location can close all day on Sundays and at 7 p.m. on other days as opposed to keeping regular mall hours.

The Dress Barn Outlet and Dress Barn Woman Outlet, a combo store, also recently closed in the center at Interstate 35 and 151st Street. The chain has eight other locations in Independence, Kansas City, Odessa, Olathe, Overland Park, and Shawnee.

Steve & Barry's was scheduled to close by this Tuesday. But as of 11:30 a.m. Monday it had yet to open its doors so it may already be closed.

Maybe they can hold out until the new intermodal facility (ramp) in Gardner opens up.

They could offer discount goods at container load prices. The ultimate warehouse store.

The mall is terrible. Just walking through the place makes me want to vomit looking at that dizzying carpet.

Raze the whole complex and start from scratch or turn it into a park for the community.

Amen to that.

I marvel at your child-like faith in the Great Mall when the economy rebounds! This mall is the biggest albatross in the history of Olathe, Kansas. The developers insulted the people of this community by building a mall on the cheap. They never had a single vision for it. They built a giant eyesore and sold it as a "Great" place. And now the dump is failing.

Of course, our city fathers will probably approve a tax increment bailout and waste more money on a sure loser.

The economy has been shifting down for quite some time. The last time the shift happened, there were mall closings and many people getting affected. The difference know is that the media communication is much greater than before and their more disbalance in the amount of wealth people currently have. There is less and less people who were adequetly prepared for a job loss. Our savings are in the negative right know. The good news is that the shift upwards should happen and everthing will be rosy again.

Every store at that mall is either closed or closing. The Great Mall's only real purpose in the past couple of years is as an indoor walking track.

Hey, give title back to the Indians. They know what to do with the land.

Since JOCO's council primary focus is creating more parks for the county, why not eminent domain the land to create more soccer fields?

That way, the land will look like it has a purpose and still not be used.

Dude they can fill that space with a Noahs Arcade. They makes tons of money. Just need to get the game with the gelatinous cube that can never be defeated. People will be pumping quarters into it all day.

Free Financial Advice

4/9/09

Question:

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.
