P&L's Savvy to reopen Monday

Champagne and fresh berries, cinnamon pear, blackberry merlot.

They sound good enough to...drink.

Kevin Wilkey, the new owner of Savvy Coffee & Wine Bar, has 42 specialty blends, not flavored syrups, so customers get a just whiff of these exotic tastes.

It’s just one of the changes he is making at the Kansas City Power & Light District location. It is scheduled to reopen Monday.

Savvy closed in late September, just four months after opening at 1201 Main St. It has one of the city’s most eye-catching retail designs created by Overland Park-based Hollis + Miller Architects.

Still, sales were "not anywhere close to what we projected," said former owner Richelle Broshous.

Wilkey planned to just buy the equipment but once he got a look at the unique space in the "hub" of downtown he decided to take it over and build on Broshous’ brand.

He also will expand the menu, offering such items as ricotta banana pancakes, panini, and vineyard chicken salad.

"Your average salad is not going to get it done," he said. "We’re known for our healthy items. We make our own dressings and we try to use seasonal products."

Savvy also will have shorter hours — 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 7 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday, and closed Sunday.

Wilkey has owned coffeehouses in several states including Texas, Virginia and California, but moved here to be closer to his nine-year-old daughter.

He now owns The Daily Buzz in Overland Park, which often delivers box lunches downtown. His Sinabrew shop will open at 2345 Grand next week.

Free Financial Advice

4/9/09

Question:

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.
