Sports & Money: MLB schedules playoffs into irrelevance

Will Jeter be hitting baseballs or snowballs? Will Jeter be hitting baseballs or snowballs?Remember when Derek Jeter was dubbed "Mr. November" for hitting a game-winning home run in an Oct. 31 World Series game that ran past midnight?

Such monikers apparently will lose their novelty if Major League Baseball continues its peculiar marketing strategy of lengthening its postseason schedule.

This year, Game 1 of the World Series is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28. Should the series go seven games, the final one would be played on Thursday, Nov. 5. This is if all goes well and games are not postponed due to rainouts or more likely, snowouts or sleetouts.

Playoff baseball in October increasingly has had to compete for the sports fan's attention with college and pro football. Now, with the league's showcase beginning four days before November, Major League Baseball will also be fighting the ratings game with pro basketball. Perhaps for the first time ever, the NBA regular season will begin one day before Game 1 of the World Series starts.

Major League Baseball is applauding itself for gaining more viewers for its recent playoff games compared to last year. But Carol Slezak of the Chicago Sun-Times recently described how the league is driving fans away with its scheduling decisions.

Free Financial Advice

4/9/09

Question:

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.
