Kansas City barbeque

Kansas City BBQ, the ultimate budget meal?

That's according to blog WalletPop.

"Despite its long preparation time and complicated and guarded seasoning methods, BBQ is also one of the most reliable meals available," the blog boasts.

The blog visited Oklahoma Joe's, Arthur Bryant's, Gates, and L.C.'s.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, 7284 W. 121st St., Overland Park, will have its grand opening Nov. 7.

Travis Dickey opened the first Dickey’s in Dallas in 1941, with a simple goal: "Serve barbecue so good people will crave it. And don’t make ’em wait too long to get it."

The business is still family-owned and the original location is still open. It has nearly doubled its locations in the last couple of years to 110 restaurants in more than 15 states.

For more information on the chain, visit www.dickeys.com

Restaurants & Institutions magazine recently profiled "barbecue appetizers" from around the country. They included:
*Sweet pork sliders topped with cole slaw and pickles at Old Glory BBQ in D.C.
*Pulled pork quesadillas at Little Dan's BBQ & Grill in Maine.
*The barbecue nachos at Southern Hospitality in NYC.
*Potato skins topped with pulled pork and Monterey Jack cheese at Yardbirds Southern BBQ in Ohio.

Arthur Bryant's was one of only 10 barbecues on the recent Playboy's A-List: America's Best Barbecue.

From the article:
We searched the country’s darkest back roads and brightest big cities to find the best of the best, with one simple rule guiding us on our gut-busting journey: To be considered in the discussion, the meat must be cooked using real wood.

In a 1972 issue of Playboy magazine, acclaimed journalist, author and food critic Calvin Trillin wrote: “It has long been acknowledged that the single best restaurant in the world is Arthur Bryant's.”

Trillin purposely left out the word “barbecue” before the word restaurant, taking it out of this specific categorization of cuisine and ranking it above all restaurants, including those with white tablecloths, four-star chefs and wine lists the size of a phone book.

Trillin’s judgment was sound then, and one might argue that the extra 35 years of flavor lingering in Arthur Bryant's pits have made the ribs, pulled pork, and beef even better over time.

midwest

Oklahoma Joe's Barbecue made the July/August issue of Midwest Airlines magazine.

From the article:
GAS STATIONS USUALLY smell like gas, right?
Not at Oklahoma Joe’s Barbecue restaurant occupying the former convenience store of a Total gas station, where the air smells more like smoked pork than diesel.

"Barbecue people have a lot of history in Kansas City,” Stehney says. “But it’s a very urban thing here, and we had to prove we weren’t just a bunch of suburban doofuses who wanted to barbecue.”

Ricky’s Pit Bar-B-Que has reopened in Kansas City, Kan. The new location is at 3800 Leavenworth Road.

Free Financial Advice

4/9/09

Question:

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.

Best Regards,
G. Douglas Dunham
