Farmers Insurance to Capital One employees: Apply here

Farmers Insurance Group needs to hire 200 people for its new Olathe operation early next year, just as Capital One Home Loans will be cutting off paychecks for most of its 320 Overland Park employees.

Capital One told employees Thursday that it plans to shut down the Overland Park office because of the sharp downturn in housing. Most employees will run out of paychecks in early February.

Farmers Insurance will need to hire 70 people that month and up to 200 by the end of April, said Trudi Andernacht, human resources manager for the insurance company.

Andernacht said Farmers Insurance needs to fill 600 jobs in Olathe next year. That means there’s room for more than the dislodged Capital One crew.

The Farmers jobs include claims adjustment and customer service work on the phone.

Well, to be fair, Farmers is a mess...but some people without a job may find it tolerable. I'm not a fan of some of their management level employees that I have known for the past 18 years but I suppose they are working as best they can within that meat grinder. Best of luck.

Within the call center industry, Farmers has a reputation of being extreme micro-managers Employees are fired way too often for issues that should be dealt with on a case-by-case circumstance, and there's a large employee turn-over rate. The management functions much like the military in bootcamp...employees are followed into the bathroom if they've been in there more than 5 minutes. In addition, being late to work is a serious offense, regardless of the circumstance--I once saw a job posting for the call center that only requested workers who live within Jo Co where they're located...and they have extremely high expectations that are very difficult to achieve. Although the salary isn't bad, it's not all that good either...it depends on how much harassment an employee is willing to take.

IMHO, Capital One employees would be better off to apply for a job in the county jail...at least they'll have government benefits, which are excellent.

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.
