A malicious virus poised to spread mayhem....or laughs on April Fools' Day

April Fools' Day on Wednesday could come with a huge computer meltdown. Or not.

It's known as the Conficker virus.

There's a good take on the virus from our sister paper in Fort Worth.

According to their story, the computer infection that is believed to have infiltrated millions of computers is expected to receive a set of instructions from its creator on April 1.

Either way, the anonymous creator of the Conficker virus has caught the attention of computer security experts around the world, with Microsoft going so far as to issue a $250,000 bounty on those who created it.

The Conficker worm, a malicious software program also known as Downadup, has spread through a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. Windows users who automatically receive updates from Microsoft are probably safe. Likely, so too are those with updated antivirus software.

The Conficker worm is thought to have easily found millions of Windows users who haven’t updated their operating systems or don’t have the right protection.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security released a tool Monday to detect whether a computer is infected by the Conficker worm.

Here's how to remove Conficker from your home computer:
Tools to remove Conficker are available at several Web sites including
Microsoft
Mcafee.
Symantec

but why worry about finding the virus and getting it before it destroys your computer. with a mac u almost can rest assure that you will never have to do that and never get a virus? makes no sense to me. ur almost saying u want a virus.

I'd take a PC over a Mac any day.

The prospect of being handed everything in a silver platter by developers (which is how everyone that praises Macs makes it sound) is boring at best.

To say that the feeling you get when you nail that little fucker that's been messing with your system is good, is a huge understatement.

And when you are being infiltrated in "real time" or "live" like I call it, and you track it back to the source...God...that makes me giggle like a 10-year-old girl inside. :D

Also, I've been using this crappy little Compaq laptop (one of the first ones that came with Vista) until I get some parts delivered; because my [sarcasm]AWESOME[/sarcasm] buddy fried my gaming rig's mobo. It's been an adventure since day one. From Vista not letting me update to viruses messing with my registry and locking me out of tools like (bows in respect) RegEdit. I've found a way to fix the issues every time though.

I would recommend Macs to those who are of limited tech knowledge, but for people like me who actually like tinkering...PCs win. Vista is a great OS, people who don't know how to work it are just screwed I guess.

PS: two weeks until I get parts for a new PC, then this laptop is going out my apartment window!

those percentages are so wrong. 90% of macs are not owned by you teens. every producer and editer in the world has a mac. along with all the other people that have sense in their mind and arent stuck up and are willing to try new things and not just stick to the same old fucked up windows. windows makes no sense after you use a mac. everything on a mac is so easy and makes so much more sense. had a mac and never crashed on me once. vista has crashed 3 times in the past 7 months. wow good job windows and way to just take windows xp add search bar some fancy toolbars and call it vista. and over 90% of viruses are intented for windows and not mac os x and even if they were they would never get past the firewall cause os x is build on unix.

I'm guessing you don't watch tv or movies or listen to music. Because macs are the #1 editing and recording machines. You know Protools and Final Cut Pro.
Do some research before you start throwing percentages around.

All my friends told me about it this morning and I think if anything goes down I'll be the only person I know with a few working computers in the morning. Think different son.

I own both PC's and Mac's and I can tell you that macs are full of vulnerabilities over two hundred and forty of them.
It's only a matter of time before these little hacker dweebs take an interest in Apple

Spoken like two people who have never tried one. It's true what they say. Once you go Mac, you never go back. I've been a P.C. user for over 15 years...until last October. Never again. I love my Mac.

Cheers!

Over 90% of the ownership demographic for Macs is made up of the 8-15 year old bracket.

The other 10% are all Apple employees or AOL lamers who wanted a computer with a colorful case.

Free Financial Advice

4/9/09

Question:

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.
