Electric jolt: 200 jobs coming to KC

Kansas City has been chosen by a U.S.-British consortium for an assembly plant expected to employ 200 people manufacturing all-electric powered delivery vans, according to government officials.Delivering jobsDelivering jobs

A formal announcement is scheduled for Friday by Smith Electric Vehicles U.S. Corp. at the Kansas City International Airport.

The assembly plant and support operations are expected to occupy existing airport buildings at least for now, said officials briefed on the endeavor, code-named Project High Voltage.

U.S. Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond and Gov. Jay Nixon are among the Missouri government officials and other dignitaries expected to be at the airport for the announcement.

A letter from the Missouri Department of Economic Development outlining state incentives for the project to Bryan Hansel, the CEO of SEV U.S. Corp., stated the average starting wage will be $44,236 annually, and the facility will employ 200 full-time workers within three years.

The real and personal property investment was calculated at $5 million.

The initial SEV operations will be located at 12200 NW Ambassador Drive, the former Farmland Industries headquarters purchased by city in 2006, and a former aircraft maintenance and engineering facility at 9200 NW 112th St., according to the letter from state development officials.

Hansel declined to comment.

The firm, which is temporarily based in Overland Park, announced on March 2nd it was planning to assemble electric-powered commercial vehicles in North America and market them to companies with delivery fleets.

The light-duty van is being built in collaboration with Ford Motor Co.

The battery-powered vehicle, to be called the Smith Newton, was described as the “world’s largest battery-electric-powered truck,” according to the SEV announcement, with a range of 100 miles, top speed of 50 mph and payload of up to 16,.280 pounds.

It will be powered by lithium-ion batteries that can be fully recharged in 6- to 8 hours.

“We are targeting our zero-emission trucks for companies that operate in urban areas and are seeking ways to deliver their goods and services in an environmentally sensitive manner,” Hansel said in the March 2nd announcement.

The company stated it had already received strong interest in the electric van from fleet operators.

SEV U.S. Corp. is a joint venture involving U.S. investors and The Tanfield Group Plc, based in the United Kingdom.

That is a great idea. We don't need those stupid jobs in Kansas City. We like our people unemployed.

They probably chose KC because of it's central US location, access to interstates and railways, Cost of Business operation, affordable wage costs(low cost of living). But I would have chosen one of those cities up north that has been hit extremely hard such as some places in Michigan and Ohio.

Great news. Why did they choose KC?

Free Financial Advice

4/9/09

Question:

BRB asks

Who do I talk to for financial advice that does not involve them trying to sell me something? We are 60 and 59, have a 200,000 annuity, are 60-70,000 credit card debt, have a house that is half paid for,own a condo in fl that is not paying for itself, have a good credit rating, not behind on anything, not facing foreclosure, wife on disability, husband still working, Want to pay off credit cards, but don't know how. Should we use part of annuity? I just want to know who to ask for help. Thanks

Answer:

It looks like you would be well served by a comprehensive financial plan which would address your concerns and give you a clear picture of where you are at financially. Financial advisors are paid in two different ways. Some receive commissions for the products they sell you. There are also fee only financial planners who work for you for a set fee and sell no products. In their case you know exactly how much it will cost you up front. It would also be preferable to use a financial planner who is a Certified Financial Planner.
